WE NEED TO CREATE OUR OWN CINEMA!
Not a physical cinema but rather our own type of movie genres. We'll never get anywhere ripping off Hollywood no matter how many IFTAs these films win. The best way to create our own cinema is to produce directors with their own styles. These films can then be sold on their names rather than the actor or movie type. Unfortunately the setup in this country is aimed at the jobbing director. From the film schools to the funding schemes to the festivals it's all about the true story/book/screenplay/actors/hype/genre rather than the director. Most world-class directors would get nowhere in Ireland. They are too individual or different to 'fit in' to our industry. That's why we have too many Ian Fitzgibbons and not enough Ivan Kavanaghs.
